Black History Month at VPE

Black History Month at VPE

Throughout the month of February students participated in reading assignments, projects and essays to learn about and celebrate Black History Month.  Below is a selection of some of those projects. We especially want to recognize 6th grade student Dominick who was honored for his artwork reflecting on the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Students Kindergarten through Third grades read the story “Beautiful Blackbird” by African American, author and illustrator Ashley Bryan in art class.  Ashley Bryan is a Coretta Scott King Award winner. Beautiful Blackbird is an adaptation of a tale from the Ila-speaking people of Cambia that resonates both with rhythm and the tale’s universal meanings - appreciating one’s heritage and discovering the beauty within.  The students were inspired by Bryan’s cut-paper artwork when creating their own art.
